MYTHS AND REALITIES

Common-law spouses

HERE’S A QUICK TEST,

to see how much you know about your rights…

I’ve been living with my partner for 10 years. I’m entitled to half of everything we’ve bought together.

I’ve been separated from my girlfriend for four years. I want to claim money from her for services I’ve rendered. I’m in no hurry; I’ve got 10 years to do it.
I have children with my common-law partner. We have the same rights and obligations towards our children as married people.
I’m not married. If my partner leaves me, I’m not entitled to any spousal support
I’ve signed a cohabitation contract. This document protects us in the event of death or break-up.
I don’t need a will. Since I’ve been living with my boyfriend for over five years, I’ll inherit everything.
The law states that after three years, people living together without being married have the same rights as married people.
I own my house. My boyfriend can never claim anything from me.
